Housefather Stays in Liberal Caucus After Palestinian Statehood Motion Backlash
-
Liberal MP Anthony Housefather has decided to stay in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's caucus after weeks of reflection following the passing of a controversial motion regarding recognizing Palestinian statehood.
-
Housefather said he seriously considered leaving the Liberal caucus but after hearing from thousands of constituents, he believes his greatest value is to remain in caucus and be a voice for them.
-
The motion initially called for recognizing a Palestinian state but Liberals rewrote it last-minute to simply work towards a two-state solution, angering both pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian groups.
-
Housefather voted against the motion and said he felt isolated within his party afterwards, considering crossing the floor to join the Conservatives.
-
After recent talks with Trudeau, Housefather will work directly with the PM on addressing antisemitism in Canada and advocating for centrist, classical Liberal values within caucus.
