Linux Kernel LTS Support Reduced from 6 Years to 2 Due to Low Old Kernel Use and Maintainer Burnout
-
Long-term support (LTS) for Linux kernels is being reduced from six to two years.
-
Currently there are six LTS Linux kernels, but the oldest ones will start being dropped and not replaced.
-
The reason is that very few people are still using the oldest LTS kernels like 4.14 in production.
-
Another reason is that Linux code maintainers are burning out from the workload.
-
While Linux development involves 2000+ programmers per release, there are fewer maintainers checking all the code.
