• Malaysia has cut former PM Najib Razak's 12-year prison sentence for corruption related to the 1MDB scandal in half to 6 years
• Najib's fine has also been reduced to 50 million ringgit ($10.6 million), but his sentence will be extended by a year if not paid by his new release date of August 23, 2028
• Najib was found guilty in 2020 of money laundering, abuse of power and other charges related to the embezzlement of billions from the 1MDB sovereign wealth fund
• Najib has consistently denied wrongdoing and appealed his convictions, but courts rejected multiple appeals
• The 1MDB fund was created after Najib took office in 2009 ostensibly to assist Malaysia's development, but was instead used as a slush fund by Najib and others
