NYC Businesses Required to Containerize Trash by 2024 to Reduce Rats and Litter
-
Mayor Adams and Sanitation Commissioner Tisch announce new rule requiring all NYC businesses to containerize trash by March 2024. This will get 20 million pounds of trash off streets daily.
-
Rule follows successful phase-in of containerization for food businesses, chains. Rat sightings down 20% this summer.
-
Businesses have flexibility on type/location of containers. Must have lids and secure sides to keep rats out.
-
Rule continues administration's efforts to reclaim public space, improve cleanliness, reduce rats.
-
When fully implemented, rule will cover half of all trash in NYC - the other half is residential.
