Akufo-Addo Nominates 8 Lawyers for Court of Appeal Amid Concerns of Court Packing

President Akufo-Addo has reportedly nominated 8 prominent lawyers as justices of the Court of Appeal. This has drawn criticism that he is packing courts with NPP members.

The 8 lawyers are seasoned practitioners with over 20+ years experience each. Some hold positions with the Ghana Bar Association.

The lawyers include Mariam Agyeman Gyasi Jawhary, Yaa Onyameye Gyakobo, Charles William Zwennes, Yaw Oppong, Nathan Parker Yarney, David Acheampong Boafo, Francis Koffie, and Dr Poku Adusei.

Appointments to the Court of Appeal are done by the president in consultation with the Judicial Appointments Advisory Board chaired by the Chief Justice.

Per the constitution, one must be of high moral character, proven integrity and have at least 12 years standing as a lawyer to qualify for Court of Appeal appointment.
