Mexico Overtakes China as Top Source of US Imports in 2022 Amid Trade Policy Shifts

For the first time in over 20 years, Mexico surpassed China as the top source of imported goods to the US in 2022. This highlights growing US-China tensions.

US imports from Mexico rose 5% from 2022-2023 to over $475 billion, while Chinese imports dropped 20% to $427 billion.

The shift is due to Trump-era tariffs on China that Biden kept, as well as efforts to reshore or nearshore manufacturing.

Some Chinese manufacturers have set up in Mexico to benefit from the USMCA trade deal.

The import changes suggest corporate concerns over China's unreliable economic policies under Xi Jinping.
