After 38 Years, Microsoft Adds Layers and Transparency to Paint App for Richer Digital Art
-
Microsoft is adding support for layers and transparency in Paint after 38 years. This allows for richer digital artwork.
-
The new features let users stack shapes, text, and images on top of each other in layers. There is a Layers button in the toolbar.
-
Paint will also support opening and saving transparent PNG files. A checkerboard pattern shows transparent areas.
-
Erasing on one layer reveals lower layers. This gives more creative control in complex, multi-layer projects.

Two weeks ago Microsoft added background removal to Paint in Windows 11. Users can now remove backgrounds with one click.
