Minneapolis Rideshare Ordinance Delayed As Uber, Lyft Threaten July 1 Exit
- Minneapolis City Council voted to delay effective date of rideshare ordinance setting driver pay to July 1, from original May 1 date. Gives more time for new companies to start up.
- Uber and Lyft said they will now delay planned departure from Twin Cities until July 1. But still pledge to leave once ordinance takes effect.
- Mayor Frey vetoed original ordinance and wants changes to prevent Uber/Lyft from leaving. Council divided on proposals to rescind or lower pay rates.
- 4 companies have applied for Minneapolis rideshare licenses so far. 6 others interested but haven't applied yet. Also a driver-owned coop working on application.
- After council vote, rideshare drivers and officials from new companies rallied to partner with legislators to ensure fair wages.
