FF7 Remake Director Discusses Career, Playable Characters, Zack's Role, and FF6 Influences for Rebirth Sequel

Naoki Hamaguchi discussed his career path at Square Enix, going from a programmer to director of the FF7 Remake trilogy. He feels privileged to work with the original FF7 creators on Rebirth.

Hamaguchi explained their intent was never to do a shot-for-shot remake, but rather deliver a new experience while keeping the core elements fans love.

Hamaguchi confirmed Yuffie, Cait Sith and Red XIII will be playable in FF7 Rebirth. Cid and Vincent will be involved but not playable.

Zack Fair plays a "very vital, important" role in Rebirth with a "crucial" part in telling the story, but gameplay details are still unknown.

Hamaguchi cites FF6 as a major influence, impressed by its worldbuilding and ensemble cast. He feels fortunate to work with FF6's Yoshinori Kitase on Rebirth.
