Arcades were hugely popular, with people dumping billions of quarters into machines to try to get the high score.

Popular retro arcade games included Space Invaders, Pac Man, Donkey Kong, and others.

Advanced technology like Laserdisc allowed more sophisticated graphics and gameplay.

There were even some primitive virtual reality arcade games being developed back in the 1980s.
