New optical disc stores exabyte of data in stadium's worth of space
- New "3D nanoscale optical disc" can store 1.6 petabits of data, equal to over 14,000 4K movies
- Achieves high capacity through 100 layers and tiny 54nm data spots, made possible by new light-sensitive material
- Can be mass produced in 6 minutes using conventional DVD manufacturing techniques
- Unlikely to be used for movies at home; better suited for data centers needing exabyte-scale capacity
- One disc could store an exabyte of data, currently requiring a stadium-sized space
