Canadians Outraged as MPs Receive $8,500 Raise, Becoming World's Second-Highest Paid
-
On April 1, Canadian MPs will receive an $8,500 raise, increasing their base salary to $203,100. This will make them the second-highest paid elected officials in the world after the U.S.
-
The prime minister's salary will also increase by $17,000 to $406,200. Other senior roles like Speaker, opposition leader, and cabinet ministers will get nearly $100,000 on top of their base pay.
-
80% of Canadians oppose the automatic pay raises for MPs, according to a recent poll. Past governments have frozen salaries during tough economic times.
-
After the raises, Canadian MPs will be the second-highest paid behind only U.S. Congress members, who earn around $236,000 annually. They surpass legislators in Israel, Australia, Singapore, and the UK.
-
The poll found only 14% of Canadians support the pay hike for MPs, with just 2% expressing strong support. Most believe MPs should not get raises while constituents struggle with inflation.
