Oregon Passes Landmark Right to Repair Bill for Consumer Electronics
- Oregon House passed Right to Repair Act, SB 1596, which now heads to the governor to sign into law
- If signed, Oregon's law would be the first to ban "parts pairing," which prevents swapping out parts between devices
- Manufacturers required to make compatible parts available without substantial conditions and at favorable prices
- Law bans reducing device functionality or displaying misleading alerts about unapproved parts
- Covers consumer electronics from 2015, except cell phones which are covered from those purchased in 2021 onward
