Labor Dept. Probes Perdue, Tyson Over Reports of Underage Migrant Children Working Dangerous Overnight Shifts
-
The Labor Department is investigating Perdue Farms and Tyson Foods over reports of migrant children as young as 13 working overnight shifts cleaning their plants.
-
The inquiry follows a NY Times report on a 14-year-old whose arm was nearly torn off while working at a Perdue plant through a contractor.
-
Children made up about a third of the overnight cleaning staff at the Perdue plant, doing hazardous jobs barred for under 18s.
-
Both Perdue and Tyson said they will cooperate with the investigation, with Perdue conducting a third-party audit of its child labor practices.
-
The probe comes after the Biden administration vowed to crack down on illegal child labor, which has spiked in recent years leading to more injuries and deaths.
