Government Announces Major Electricity Tariff Reforms: Subsidies Cut, Fixed Charges Introduced, Industries to Benefit
- Subsidy for domestic consumers using less than 400 units to be reduced by Rs161 billion to Rs431 billion
- Cross-subsidy for consumers using below 400 units to be withdrawn; fixed charges to be imposed
- Higher fixed charges for unprotected consumers using over 100 units; variable tariff to be reduced
- Agriculture consumers currently getting Rs39.3 billion subsidy to lose it; tariff to be raised
- Industrial tariff to be reduced to make industries more competitive; domestic cross-subsidy to end
