Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee Stumbles in Pre-Eclipse Moon Comments
-
Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee claimed the moon is "made up mostly of gases" during a speech to students before the solar eclipse.
-
She also incorrectly referred to the moon as a planet, said NASA is going back to the moon in a couple years, and claimed she wants to be "first in line" to live on the moon.
-
After her comments drew mockery online, she claimed she simply "misspoke" and meant to refer to the sun instead of the moon.
-
This isn't the first lunar-related gaffe for Jackson Lee - in 1997 she apparently asked if Mars rover photos showed Neil Armstrong's flag he planted on the moon.
-
Jackson Lee defended herself by saying Republicans should focus on issues like prenatal care instead of calling out her mistake, and that she cares more about the students experiencing the eclipse.
