Tesla Yet to Seek Permit for Robotaxi Service in California, Despite Musk's Pledge

Tesla has not contacted California regulators about plans for a robotaxi service, even though Musk said he would make an announcement in August.

Tesla would need permits from California agencies to operate robotaxis, which it does not yet have. Other states also said Tesla has not contacted them.

Experts say Tesla is "a long way away" from getting approval for a robotaxi service in California. The approval process could take over 8 months.

It's possible Tesla could seek to launch the service in another state first to avoid California regulations.

Tesla already has a tense relationship with California regulators, who accused it last year of deceptive practices around its driver assistance systems.
