Russia Seeks Return to UN Human Rights Council Despite Ongoing Ukraine Invasion

Russia is seeking election to the U.N. Human Rights Council after being suspended in April 2022 for invading Ukraine. The vote is scheduled for Tuesday.

The vote could be close because Russia still has support among some countries in the global south.

Independent rights groups say Russia is unfit for the council due to war crimes in Ukraine and political repression at home.

Russia's removal last year was only the second time a country was kicked off the 47-member council.

Despite isolation from the West, Russia retains support for opposing Western hypocrisy and promoting "traditional values."
