OpenAI's Altman Eyes AI Consumer Devices But Not Smartphone Competitors

Sam Altman said at a WSJ event he is interested in AI consumer devices but not competing with smartphones, which he called "phenomenal."

The Information and FT recently reported OpenAI was in talks with Jony Ive and Masayoshi Son for a $1B AI device deal.

Altman believes future AI devices won't replace smartphones in popularity and doesn't know yet what an AI device would look like.

He said AI enables "something fundamentally new" worth exploring for potential new computing platforms.

OpenAI recently updated its core values, replacing "audacious" and "impact-driven" with having an "AGI focus" and being "intense and scrappy."
