Independent Senators Allege Intimidation by Conservative Leader Over Carbon Tax Bill
-
Independent senators say they were bullied by Conservative Leader Don Plett over a bill to exempt farmers from the carbon tax. Police are investigating threats directed at Sen. Bernadette Clement.
-
The incident happened when Clement moved to postpone debate on the bill. Plett allegedly yelled at the senators, threw his earpiece, and suggested retaliation against another senator.
-
Conservative MPs and senators posted "wanted" style images targeting Clement and Sen. Chantal Petitclerc online after the confrontation. Law enforcement is investigating the threats.
-
Plett conceded he got "angry" and "frustrated" but said senators used to resolve disputes over beers. He didn't apologize but said bullying is unacceptable.
-
The senators want the Speaker to rule Plett breached privilege. Clement said "no one should have to take it on the chin" when bullied, while Petitclerc said "the line has clearly been crossed."
