Smurfit Kappa in talks with WestRock to create paper and packaging giant

Smurfit Kappa, Europe's largest paper and packaging producer, is in talks to merge with U.S. rival WestRock to create a $19 billion paper and packaging giant.

The combined entity would be named Smurfit WestRock, headquartered in Dublin, and listed on the NYSE. WestRock shareholders would get shares in the new company.

The merger could generate over $400 million in annual cost savings and would strengthen Smurfit's presence in the Americas.

Smurfit Kappa would de-list from Euronext Dublin and the London Stock Exchange if the deal goes through.

The deal would combine two companies with complementary portfolios and capabilities in renewable, recyclable and biodegradable packaging.
