Los Angeles Woman Claims $558 Million Powerball Jackpot, California's 3rd Billion-Dollar Winner This Year

The $1.08 billion Powerball jackpot winner from July 2023 was Yanira Alvarez, who purchased the ticket at a mini market in downtown Los Angeles.

Alvarez chose to take the $558.1 million lump sum payout instead of annuity payments.

Her prize is the 6th largest in U.S. history and 3rd largest Powerball jackpot.

Two other billion-dollar Powerball tickets were sold in California in 2023, including a $1.7 billion ticket sold in October.

Since 1985, the California Lottery has raised over $43.8 billion for public education through games like Powerball.
