This Company Is Turning Waste Into Clean Hydrogen. And Electricity. And Water
-
Toyota, FuelCell Energy and Toyota deployed the world's first "tri-gen" system at Toyota's port facility in Long Beach, CA that turns waste gas into electricity, hydrogen and water.
-
The $35 million system generates 2.3 MW of electricity, 1,200 kg of hydrogen and 1,400 gallons of water daily from agricultural waste and sludge.
-
Toyota will use the hydrogen for fuel cell trucks and cars, electricity for port operations, and water for vehicle washing. It will eliminate over 9,000 tons of CO2 annually.
-
This is the first tri-gen system of its type but likely not the last, with potential applications at ports, mines, and other locations needing reliable power, hydrogen and water.
-
The system's hydrogen production aligns with U.S. pushes for clean hydrogen and CA incentives for clean energy projects at polluted ports.
