Nationally, a household would need to earn $99,000 to afford the median home price of $415,500. This assumes 10% down payment.

In 23 states, buyers need to earn over $100,000 to avoid being cost-burdened by housing costs.

Hawaii had the highest income needed ($202,526) due to a median list price of $850,000.

West Virginia had the lowest income needed ($55,039) thanks to a median list price of $231,000.

Higher mortgage rates (around 6.8%) and climbing prices have made buying a home less affordable compared to previous years.
