Microsoft to Charge Commercial Windows 10 Users for Security Updates Starting in 2025
- Commercial Windows 10 users must pay $61 per device starting October 2025 to get Extended Security Updates (ESU)
- ESU pricing doubles each consecutive year for 3 years maximum
- Pricing is cumulative, so joining in year 2 means paying for year 1 too
- Microsoft Education customers pay just $1, $2, and $4 for the 3 ESU years
- Many Windows 10 users can't upgrade to Windows 11 due to hardware restrictions, forcing them to pay for ESU
