UC Berkeley study: EVs cut emissions in Bay Area but more needed to reach climate goals
- New UC Berkeley study confirms EVs reduce CO2 emissions and improve air quality in the San Francisco Bay Area
- Between 2018-2022, overall CO2 emissions dropped 1.8% yearly; vehicle emissions dropped 2.6% due to EV adoption
- Almost 40% of new car registrations in San Jose and 34% in San Francisco were EVs last year
- Study used sensor network tracking CO2 and 5 air pollutants to isolate traffic emissions and link them to EVs
- Emissions need to decrease by 3.7% yearly to reach California's 2045 net-zero emissions goal; current rate is positive but not fast enough
