YouTube Music Contractors Lose Jobs After Months of Failed Union Bargaining Efforts with Google
-
Contractors with YouTube Music tried to collectively bargain with Google for the past year and won the right to unionize, but Google has refused to negotiate.
-
On Friday, some of those unionized contractors lost their jobs when Google ended its contract with the contracting company Cognizant.
-
This happened while the workers were speaking at an Austin City Council meeting trying to get the council to pass a resolution calling on Google to bargain.
-
Cognizant claims the workers were not laid off but are part of a "talent pool" while they look for other roles, but the union disputes this.
-
Google claims it is not responsible since the workers are Cognizant employees, but the National Labor Relations Board previously ruled Google has an obligation to bargain with the unionized workers.
