United Airlines Hikes Checked Bag Fees by $5, Following Recent Trend
-
United Airlines is raising checked bag fees by $5 for economy class passengers on domestic flights, matching recent fee hikes by American Airlines and JetBlue.
-
The new fee will be $35 if paid online 24+ hours before the flight, $40 if paid at the airport. The second checked bag fee also rises by $5.
-
Premium cabin passengers, United credit card holders, and elite frequent flyer members can still check bags for free.
-
American, JetBlue, and Alaska Airlines have also raised checked bag fees recently as airlines generate billions in revenue from the fees.
-
Bag fees were first introduced by American Airlines in 2008 when fuel prices were high and have now become an important revenue source for US airlines.
