University of Maryland Awards $1.5 Million for Ethical AI Research
- $1.5 million in grants awarded to 8 interdisciplinary faculty teams at University of Maryland to conduct research related to trustworthy AI development
- Projects include using AI chatbots for smoking cessation, animal-like robots to help autistic children, evaluating bias in AI systems, and more
- Part of a new $20 million Institute for Trustworthy AI in Law & Society (TRAILS) launched in May 2023
- Seeks to transform AI field to prioritize ethics and inclusion of marginalized communities
- Additional funding opportunities available; goal is for TRAILS to be leading resource on ethical AI for policymakers, educators, etc.
