Partial self-driving systems get poor safety grades from insurance group
-
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety tested 14 partial automated driving systems from various automakers and none received a "good" safety rating.
-
The systems were evaluated on driver monitoring, attention reminders, emergency procedures and other safeguards. Only 1 was rated "acceptable", 2 were "marginal", the rest "poor".
-
Tesla's Full Self-Driving had the worst rating overall, with 6 "poor" scores and 2 "acceptable". Tesla Autopilot was slightly better.
-
Tests involved obscuring the driver's face and weighting the steering wheel to see if systems could be tricked.
-
While the results are worrying, the IIHS President said fixes may be possible through simple software updates since the systems did well in at least one category.
