GOP Senate candidate questions timing of ailing Democratic Rep. Wexton's retirement
-
Hung Cao, a Republican Senate candidate, accused ailing Democratic Rep. Jennifer Wexton of waiting to retire until she is fully vested in her congressional pension.
-
Wexton announced she will not seek re-election due to an aggressive form of Parkinson's disease. She plans to retire in 2025 when her term expires.
-
In an interview, Cao speculated Wexton may retire in January 2023 to vest in her pension after 5 years in Congress. However, Wexton does not currently qualify for a full pension.
-
Cao compared Wexton to Rep. Abigail Spanberger, saying she is "out for herself" after announcing she won't seek re-election to run for governor instead.

Cao is a Navy veteran who served in special operations. He unsuccessfully ran against Wexton for a House seat in 2022.
