Chinese workforce in Africa drops by over 60% in past decade due to reduced infrastructure spending
- Chinese workers in Africa peaked around 2015 at 263,000, but have since fallen by 64% to 93,000 by end of 2021 due to less infrastructure project funding from China
- Revenues of Chinese construction companies in Africa also peaked in 2015 and then declined, directly correlated with number of workers
- The Covid-19 pandemic halved the number of Chinese workers in Africa in 2020 due to travel restrictions
- Countries like Angola and Algeria saw almost 90% of Chinese workers leave as construction projects dried up after the 2014 oil price plunge
- While most countries saw declines, Egypt and DRC bucked the trend with small increases in recent years tied to major construction projects and mining industry
