Windows 11 update locks out PCs over 15 years old
- Windows 11 version 24H2 will require the POPCNT CPU instruction, meaning very old PCs won't boot the OS.
- PCs over 15 years old that were already unsupported by Windows 11 will now definitely not boot.
- POPCNT became standard in mid-2000s AMD and Intel CPUs, so PCs in the last 15 years are unaffected.
- Some people were unofficially running Windows 11 on older Intel Core 2 Duo PCs - 24H2 will not boot on those.
- This doesn't affect more modern but still unsupported PCs with Intel 7th-gen or AMD Ryzen 1000 chips.
