Microsoft Testing Less Disruptive Windows Updates Using Hotpatching to Reduce Reboots
- Microsoft testing delivering more Windows security updates without requiring reboots, using "hotpatching"
- Hotpatching originated in Windows Server, allows updating in-memory code without restarting processes
- With Virtualization Based Security (VBS) enabled, hotpatching can work on consumer Windows devices
- You'll still need to reboot every few months, but reboots will be less frequent
- Hotpatching works on Windows 11 devices meeting system requirements; won't work on Arm Windows devices yet
