Classic Video Games Immortalized on Blockchains Through New Protocols
-
Ordinals protocol allows users to "inscribe" media like games and apps directly onto the Bitcoin blockchain by storing them on tiny "satoshis". This has enabled basic games to be played directly on the blockchain.
-
A similar Doginals protocol brings the same functionality to Dogecoin. The extra storage space allowed developers to inscribe a full version of the game Doom to be played on Dogecoin.
-
Playing these inscribed games just requires a web browser - the game applet runs right in the browser window, controlled by keyboard and mouse. But only simple, classic games can fit due to storage limits.
-
It's unclear why people are inscribing games this way - it could be for novelty, preservation, or just experimentation. But the result is classic games stored immutably on blockchains, playable for as long as those chains are active.
-
Other blockchains like Solana and Avalanche are mimicking these protocols to allow basic apps and games to be inscribed on their chains as well.
