Youth Unemployment Rises in Canada As Fewer Young People Join Workforce
• Labour participation rate for 15-24 year olds in Canada fell over 3 percentage points since last April to 62.7% in January
• Drop especially large for young women - participation rate down to 62.5%, lowest since 2000 outside of pandemic
• Number of non-participating youth rose by about 200,000 in past year to 1.9 million total
• Youth unemployment rate still low historically at 10.8%, but up from 9.3% in summer 2022
• Students and recent graduates make up large share of increase in overall unemployment rate
