RGB RAM lighting can discolor some GPU backplates over time
-
RGB lighting from system RAM can potentially damage graphics card backplates, turning the black finish brown. This has been reported in MSI, Asus, and Zotac cards.
-
The discoloration corresponds directly to the size and shape of the RAM modules. It's possibly due to heat or UV light from bright blue RGB settings.
-
The issue has been seen primarily with MSI Gaming Trio GeForce RTX 3080 cards, but also some Asus and Zotac cards. Users have G.Skill TridentZ RGB RAM.
-
MSI claimed the backplates have "graphene" but they actually seem to be plastic/graphite with an acrylic paint coating that is responsive to the RAM light.
-
The bleaching is cosmetic and doesn't impact performance, but could make the graphics card harder to sell. Those with RGB lighting should take care with installation.
