ILWU Files for Bankruptcy Amid Legal Battle with ICTSI Over Portland Port Operations
-
The International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) has filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection to resolve litigation with an Oregon affiliate of International Container Terminal Services Inc (ICTSI).
-
The ILWU says it can no longer afford to defend against ICTSI's "scorched-earth litigation tactic" after attempting to resolve the decade-long dispute.
-
The bankruptcy filing comes ahead of a looming trial over claims the union illegally slowed operations at the Port of Portland when it was operated by an ICTSI affiliate.
-
The ILWU has over 4,000 members across the United States and Canada.
-
In August, the ILWU ratified a 6-year contract improving pay and benefits for 22,000 dockworkers at 29 ports from California to Washington.
