Study Finds Predictive Policing Software Ineffective for Plainfield, NJ Police
-
A new study finds predictive policing software was ineffective at predicting crimes for Plainfield, NJ police. It had a less than 0.5% accuracy rate over a 10-month period.
-
The software, called Geolitica (formerly PredPol), claimed to identify "hot spots" where crimes were likely to occur.
-
Plainfield police captain admitted the software didn't help reduce crime and wasn't used much, if at all, leading them to get rid of it.
-
Prior investigations found the software disproportionately targeted low-income communities of color.
-
Wired reported Geolitica is ceasing operations by end of year, with some staff moving to a different law enforcement tech company.
