Putin's Party Leads Sham Votes in Occupied Ukraine Before 2023 Russian Election
-
Russia held local elections in 4 Ukrainian regions it annexed, with Putin's party leading initial vote counts according to Russia's election commission.
-
The elections are considered illegitimate by Ukraine and allies. They come before 2023 Russian presidential elections expected to extend Putin's rule.
-
Voting occurred in annexed regions with makeshift polling stations, as well as in Russia-annexed Crimea and parts of Russia near Ukraine.
-
In Moscow mayoral election, incumbent Kremlin-backed Sobyanin won a "convincing" victory for a 4th term according to officials.
-
Additional security precautions were taken for voting in Russian regions bordering Ukraine that have seen attacks. The only competitive governor's race is in remote Khakassia.
